When summer comes to an end and the city fills up again, what could be better than an art tour of Milanese museums to gently accompany the return to work?

In the halls of Palazzo Reale and the spaces of the Fondazione Prada, from the hub of the Fabbrica del Vapore to the building of the Palazzo dell’Arte, Milan offers a variety of locations that are ideal for a complete experience into the world of contemporary art.

Whether you are tourists of residents, business travellers or just passing through, take note of these addresses: we have selected 5 exhibitions for you, opening now or closing in the month of September 2024, for a full immersion of art and culture in the heart of Milan.

PICASSO (Palazzo Reale)

Palazzo Reale host the ‘Picasso the Foreigner’ exhibit, curated by Annie Cohen-Solal and focused on a new perspective: that the Spanish maestro immigrated to France (where he never obtained citizenship). The exhibition includes 80 works from the Musée National Picasso-Paris and the dal Musée National de l’Histoire de l’Immigration of Paris interspersed with documents, photos, letters and videos. The curator has defined it as “a lesson in optimism”. From September 20th to February 2, 2025.

PINO PASCALI (Fondazione Prada)

One of the greatest exponents of Italian Arte Povera (Poor Art), the prematurely deceased Pino Pascali is celebrated at the Fondazione Prada with an extensive retrospective curated by British art historian Mark Godfre. Divided into 4 sections, the exhibition occupies 3 buildings of the iconic golden building with 50 works, a selection of photos and videos that depict the Pugliese artist surrounded by his creations. Stand-out among these is “Vedova Blue” (Blue Widow), perhaps his most famous installation, exhibited at the Biennale of 1968 at the peak of his career. Until September 23rd.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL (Fabbrica del Vapore)

Imagine being giants in a Lilliputian village: it will be somewhat alienating – and certainly strange and funny – and a “viaggio oltre la realtà” (journey beyond reality) that this exhibition at the Fabbrica del Vapore offers, in a miniaturized world whose unit of measure the point of a finger! Exhibition ‘Small is Beautiful’ – involving numerous artists and curated by its creator, Serge Victoria – has come to Milan, Italy, for the first time after finding acceptance abroad (from Paris to New York and Brussels) to introduce the wider public to the little-big artistic expression of miniatures. Until September 22, 2024.

GAE AULENTI (Triennale)

Exhibition ‘Gae Aulenti at the Triennale of Milan’ is a tribute to one of the most important figures of 20th century Italian architecture with great visual impact that reproduces some of his most famous architectural designs and most iconic product designs at 1:1 scale, from the Olivetti store in Buenos Aires of 1968 to the Zurich Fiat dealership of 1973. A comprehensive journey through the career of an Italian designer and architect considered to be one of the most inspired and influential in the world of design. Running until January 12, 2025.

VALERIO ADAMI (Palazzo Reale)

To celebrate more than sixty years of artistic research of one of the main post-war Italian painters, Valerio Adami, still strangely unknown to the wider public although very influential and contemporary, Palazzo Reale presents a retrospective exhibition of more than 70 large format paintings and 50 designs. Pop artist much loved by Italo Calvino, his works meld modernity and metaphor, philosophy and mythology. Completing the exhibition is an interesting docu-film on his life, interwoven with the most important intellectual events of the last century. Until September 22, 2024.
