Perhaps it’s the inter-seasons – spring and autumn – that are the best times of the year to enjoy a special weekend in the heart of Milan. And among the many cultural events that animate the city centre, art exhibits boast of locations with high visual impact like the Fabbrica del Vapore, an ex-industrial complex that serves as a multifunctional pole today, or the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, an unusual exhibition space dedicated to modern and contemporary art. We have selected 5 must-see exhibitions for a Milanese autumn so rich in events.
1) Andy Warhol at the Fabbrica del Vapore
Not only Campbell’s soup cans and smiling Marilyn: the new exhibition on the father of Pop Art – “Andy Warhol. La pubblicità della forma” (Advertising of the form) – is a voyage in the human and artistic universe of one of the greatest innovators of the last century. The exhibition includes more than 300 works on canvas, silkscreen prints on silk, cotton and paper, photos and original vinyl records starting with some of his earliest works (as an advertising graphic designer and illustrator) showing the ability of the man and the vision of the artist. Running until March 26, 2023, in the spaces of the Fabbrica del Vapore.

2) Max Ernst at Palazzo Reale
The adventurous creative parabola of Max Ernst – defined by some as “the most surrealist of the surrealists” – extends through the halls of the Palazzo Reale in more than 400 works, including paintings, sculptures, designs, collages, photos, jewellery and other materials collected from museums, foundations and private collections.
This monumental exhibition on his production – a “magical realism” that defies a single definition ad embraces more than 70 years of history and spaces, from Europe to the United States – is the first Italian retrospective dedicated to this German figure (also holding American and French citizenship). Running until February 26, 2023.

3) Bruce Nauman at the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca
The neon art of Bruce Nauman invades the spaces of the Pirelli Hangar Bicocca with an exhibition – “Neons Corridors Rooms” – organized in collaboration with the Tate Modern in London and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. The focus of the exhibition is the spatial and architectural study of the American video artist, starting from his famous fluorescent corridors and rooms where the body is placed in relation with the space, time and the language. Free admission and booking recommended (for priority entrance at the selected time). Running until February 26, 2023.
